Don Porter was born and raised in San Jose, CA. When he was about 4 years old, his father discarded agnosticism and became a Christian. From then on, Don was in church just about every time something was going on. During his senior year of high school, Don committed his life to Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He went to Bible College in Denver, CO, and then transferred to Springfield, MO. After two years there he married Dianne Couey and they moved to CA to finish his degree.
In 1973, after graduating at age 21, Don became the pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Norwalk, CA. The church grew from 50 to 100 during their two years there. From southern CA the young family moved to the Florida Keys and started the Key Largo Baptist Temple. Along with starting the church, Don taught in Colonial Christian School. Leaving the Florida Keys because of family health issues, Don served in the South Dade Baptist Church of Homestead, FL, as a youth pastor and school teacher. Don and his growing family moved back to southern CA when he assumed the pastorate of a very young church. In two and a half years the church grew from 25 to 125 and bought their own church building.
In 1983, Don and his family moved to Montana and started a church in the Bitterroot Valley. The church became one of the few Baptist churches of a decade that grew to self-supporting status. After serving there for 5 years, the family moved back to the SF bay area where Don worked in construction with his father. In 1994, Don joined the pastoral staff of the Los Gatos Christian Church (now Venture Christian). There he served in the following areas: adult ministries, pastoral care, elder council, preaching and teaching, new members, evangelism, counseling, drama, and some college ministry. He was on the staff for 11 years.
For the past eight years, Don has served as field staff for Evangelism Explosion (EE) International – a world-wide non-denominational ministry. His main duty is training Christians to more effectively share the gospel with others. He is still active in preaching, training, mentoring, prayer meetings, and personal evangelism. Don continues to preach about three times monthly. His passions are preaching, teaching, mentoring, promoting Spirit led, scripture based prayer and personal evangelism. He and his wife have been married for 43 years and have three wonderful children.
